2016 Music Teaching Artist
“I still believe in the power of role-models and their ability to positively change the course of young lives", says Willie Jones, a UMass Boston senior majoring in Music leading toward initial licensure. Willie currently teaches classes for youth in piano and drums at Parish of Christ Church/Iglesia de San Juan in Hyde Park, MA. Willie is also a group leader for music for Bright Start, an after-school program in Arlington for elementary aged youth. This past summer Willie attended the Festival de Música de Pacífico "Petronio Álvarez" and its related workshops held in Cali, Colombia to learn more about Afro-Colombian music and history. With this added knowledge, Willie seeks to share with young learners, who may not have the opportunity to travel the world, the vast and rich musical identities that lie within the African Diaspora and the world. Willie hopes that this knowledge will help to affirm and inspire his current and future students of the many meaningful possibilities of an ever increasingly diverse world.
