Week 1
By Ivan Jimenez
The first week at City Spotlights was Boot Camp! Throughout the week, the teens partook in multiple discussions around social issues happening in our community, learned how to properly advocate, prepared performances, and more! What I noticed throughout the week was the true dedication the teens had when it came to the activities. They were passionate about the topics discussed, and were also curious and willing to learn more about other topics they didn’t know much about. When it came to group work, I noticed how considerate the teens were to other peoples’ experiences and always showed respect to their peers which I found really heartwarming.
Something that I was always excited for was specialty at the end of the day. In dance specialty, the teens tried out modern dance. Because it’s a style most of the teens haven’t done before, they were willing to jump into the new material. By the end of the week they understood the fundamentals of modern dance, and were appreciative of having that learning experience.
This week, the teens also chose the theme for the rest of the program and for the final showcase, which is “Human Rights.” This sets us off to continue doing great work, like preparing to advocate and perform at the State House next week, and to begin preparing for the flash mob! Overall, the first week went really well and was a great start to the rest of the work that will be done in City Spotlights!
